Engaging Students with Flipgrid, Derrick Mears

One of the difficult challenges I faced when I first began to adapt to teaching online versus face to face was missing that face to face connection with students. Getting to know my students I found to be difficult without being able to hear their voice or see their faces.

Also, when students begin the online learning experience, it can be difficult to navigate software and hardware such as cameras and microphones which can further add to their stress and the difficulty with making “connections”.

After investigating many different platforms, I have been using Flipgrid as an interactive video platform for not only student to student communication but teacher to student communication as well. The platform has more of a casual social media look and feel with emoji’s and other fun features and integrates smoothly with laptops, desktops and even smartphone cameras and microphones making it easy to use.
